Marine mammals use the beach as a place to rest, especially when they are not feeling well. Often, an animal will haul out of the water for several days to recuperate from a long journey or while feeling under the weather. The best way to help these animals is to give them plenty of space so that they feel safe enough to rest. If you do see a marine mammal on the beach, we encourage you the call the Seaside Aquarium at (503) 738-6211.

Elephant Seal on the Beach

Young elephant seals use the beach while they molt, a process where the seal loses all of its fur and re-grows a new coat. Salt water would irritate the sores that they get during their molt, so they choose to haul out of the water.

Sea Lion on the Beach

Marine mammals (both dead and alive) can carry diseases which are transmittable to humans and dogs. It is very important to keep your dog(s) on a leash if you see a marine mammal on the beach.
